Jimmy V Espy Speech

So recently in English class, we have been researching famous speeches. And so I was reacquainted with my favorite speech of all time- Jimmy Valvano’s Espy speech, which happened to be my source of inspiration for the week.

Now a little bit of background on Jimmy V, he was a fiery Italian man who led an underdog NC State basketball team to a NCAA national championship. He was loved by many and unfortunately got cancer earlier on in life.

If you haven’t watched this speech yet, you really should. The last lines of the speech really get me every time.

There are 2 types of motivation: the kind that makes you want to get things done (the hype) and the inspirational kind that makes you appreciate life. This speech is really mostly the ladder. So I can’t deliver the hype every time, oh well.

Quotes

I’m not going to lie, I’ve started to run out of new material that ignites my hype lately. I’ve been pretty much just running off of recycled hype at this point. So for this post, I’m going to compile some of my favorite pump-up quotes. So here we go:

I know I’m gon’ get got, but I’m gon’ get mine more than I get got doe.”

-Marshawn Lynch

“They tried to bury us. They didn’t know that we were seeds.”

-Mexican Proverb

“Talent sets the floor. Character sets the ceiling.”

-Bill Belichick

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

-Mike Tyson

Success isn’t owned, it’s leased. And the rent is due every day.”

-J.J. Watt

“……”

-Drew Serraino

Pump Up Playlist

Till the End– Logic

Danger Zone– Kenny Loggins

6 PM in New York– Drake

Rigamortus– Kendrick Lamar

Homicide– Future and Snoop Dogg

Made in America– Toby Kieth

All Eyez On Me– 2Pac

Radioactive with Kendrick Lamar– Imagine Dragons

Collin Widecan

My source of inspiration this week came from the best teammate and captain a guy could ask for, Collin Widecan.

His talent in football is the result of being someone who just refuses to quit. This guy played so hard that he could barely walk after most games this past year.

This past Wednesday was a huge day for him and the Mariemont football program as a whole. He fulfilled a dream by signing with the University of Cincinnati to play football.

This is a huge deal especially at Mariemont. Being a division 4 team, we rarely have any guys go on to play division 1 football. I’ve been told many times that nobody who plays at Mariemont will go anywhere in the sport. And as someone who wants to play at the next level, Collin’s signing was really motivating.

He’s not a huge guy and he’s not super human, but he worked his ass off and accomplished what he wanted. He has set an example for me. If he could do it, maybe I can too.

My First Varsity Game

My source of inspiration for the week came over the weekend. The varsity goalie for my hockey team was injured in a game and I was called upon to step up from my typical JV roll to play the varsity game.

I was nervous. I’m not exactly the best hockey player. I’m typically standing on the winning side of a 10-0 blowout. And I don’t really know what to expect because I’ve never played a varsity game.

So I decided that I was just going to give it my best shot, and if we lose, oh well. This is really not something that I was prepared for.

We played at the Cincinnati Gardens, probably my favorite place to play because it’s a big arena and it’s special to play in a place that could seat thousands of people.

I warmed up and got in to the zone, and was ready for the puck to drop. I made a few quick saves and our team took a lead. We battled throughout the game and ended with a 4-2 win after I made a couple key saves.

I was given the MVP game puck for my efforts, and my coach told me that I had some more Varsity games in my future.

So my point is basically that you don’t always know what you’re capable of doing. I went out and gave it my best effort and accomplished things that I didn’t think I could. Anything worth doing in life is worth doing at 100%.

Peyton

My motivation this week came from the sheriff himself- Peyton Manning. His career was looking dim. Shortly after taking the thrown of most passing yards of all time, he proceeded to throw four interceptions and get replaced after hurting his foot.

Almost everyone, including myself, assumed he was down and out. Too old to compete anymore. Another legend dead.

But then this weekend he came back into the game to replace a struggling Brock Osweiler. And the real Peyton was back. True to form, he led the Broncos to multiple touchdowns in a close win against the Chargers.

To quote Manning, “It’s not wanting to win that makes you a winner; it’s refusing to fail.”

Herb Brooks

Now that football in long-gone for the year, I have to start shifting my focus towards hockey. So I have decided to go with a hockey quote as my source of inspiration this week.

This quote is brought to you by Herb Brooks. If you are not familiar with Herb Brooks, he is a former player and coach for the US Olympic hockey team. He is known for coaching the “miracle on ice” hockey coach when the US defeated the mighty USSR team in 1980.

This quote really resonated with me because of the word choice. There are plenty of quotes all getting out and following you dreams or whatnot but I really liked this one. It’s short and sweet and has some impact. “Sit with your dreams.” That sounds horrible. Take some risk.

MiniTron

This video was my source of inspiration this week.

Julian Edelman has been one of my favorite players in the NFL for a long time. He has been told that he is too small and won’t make it but defied the odds anyway. He plays tenaciously and scrappy; characteristics that I like to attribute to myself, even though we play completely different positions. He is the epitome of defying the odds, he went from being a quarterback at a smaller college to being an elite NFL receiver.

The video includes bits of his past as well as highlights of what he is able to accomplish now. Nobody really believed in him and he proved them wrong and ended up catching a Super Bowl winning touchdown. I look up to him and admire him as i try to work to be the best I can be.

Smile Because It Happened

So the phrase “don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened” is over used and kind of cliche in my opinion, but it was a source of motivation for me this past Friday. The football season ended, and it was sad knowing that I won’t be strapping up the pads again until next summer. It was even more sad realizing that I will never be able to play on the same field again with the nine seniors this year. Most of those guys won’t ever have the chance to competitively play the game again, a situation that I will be in in a couple of years.

But it is important, as the phrase says to, “smile because it happened.” I am happy with the lessons I have learned this season and I am proud of my accomplishments as well as the accomplishments of the team. I am going to look forward to another great season next year rather than being sad that it had to come to an end last week.
